Several years ago we were in Hurricane, Utah, spending time with our cousins. My husband, my two daughters, and I went ATV-ing with our favorite cousins.
If you’ve never been to that part of Utah, everything is red.
Red dirt. Red sand. Red rocks.
I made one critical mistake:
I wore a cute shirt I actually liked.
That shirt is now permanently stained red. Lesson learned — don’t wear nice clothes when you’re riding ATVs in southern Utah.
After the ride, we parked the ATVs in the garage. On the top shelf were these huge plastic ducks. My girls immediately asked, “What are those for?”
Hunting. Shooting. Something very un-California 😅
Our cousins said, “We don’t need them anymore — you can take one.
So my oldest daughter took a giant plastic duck home to California and she put it on their doorstep. They even named him.
Harold.

Harold just sat there.
Big. Visible. Impressive from a distance.
But completely useless.
And it made me think about business.
So many companies look great from the outside:
- Revenue looks high
- Customers are coming in
- Marketing sounds confident
But behind the scenes?
- Cash flow is tight
- Payroll is stressful
- The owner isn’t paying themselves
- Decisions are made on hope, not numbers
From the outside, everything looks fine.
Inside, it’s chaos.

At Finance MakeOver, we don’t work on the plastic duck version of a business.
We help you clean up what’s underneath — the money, the systems, the decisions — so your business actually works for you.
No fake shell.
No pretending.
No Harold sitting on the porch.
Just a business that supports your life, your family, and your peace of mind.
More coming soon.

P.S. Revenue can be loud. Profit is quiet — but powerful.
