The Profit Letters

As my husband said this weekend…
“It’s the end of an era.”

In 2023, I sold the music school I had built and loved for over a decade. We poured heart, soul, and hundreds of songs into that place—my daughter taught piano, I taught voice, and we had 25 amazing employees, a beautiful studio with 9 teaching rooms, a store and a recital hall.

Even after we sold, I kept seven of my voice students—just a few hours a week. It didn’t feel like it was that much. But in 2025, I realized something profound:

“The only way to scale is to say no.”Alex Hormozi

Three weeks ago, I made the incredibly emotional decision to fully step away from teaching music.

I told my final seven students: I’m retiring.

We had one last recital this past Friday.

They brought gifts, flowers, and heartfelt cards. These weren’t just students—they were my voice daughters. And saying goodbye was… rough.

But here’s what I’m learning:

“Going 10X is not about doing more. It’s about doing far less—but at a much higher level of excellence.”Dan Sullivan, 10x is Easier Than 2x

Saying no to something good creates space to say yes to something greater. For me, that’s Finance MakeOver. It’s the mission that keeps pulling me forward: helping entrepreneurs stop avoiding their finances and start building profitability.

If you’ve been feeling stretched thin—juggling too many businesses, goals, or side hustles—maybe it’s time to ask:

What good thing do I need to release so I can step fully into the great thing?

This week, I invite you to be brave and say no.  Even better, tell me what you are giving up.

Profitably Yours,

Karen Lake

P.S. If your financial systems are holding you back, not lifting you up… maybe it’s time to say no to guessing—and yes to a CFO Strategic Review.
