A few days ago, my daughter Penelope snapped this picture of two of my grandchildren.
They were lying on the floor inside an old picture frame.
As I looked at the photo later, I couldn’t stop thinking about how much it reminded me of our money stories.
Most of us grow up inside a frame.
The frame is made up of things we heard as children:
“Money doesn’t grow on trees.”
“Rich people are greedy.”
“We can’t afford that.”
“People like us don’t have money.”
Or maybe you grew up hearing a scripture quoted over and over:
“The love of money is the root of all evil.”
Somewhere along the way, many of us quietly translated that into:
“Money is bad.”
Money is neutral.
Money is simply a tool.
The love of money can be destructive.
So can the love of power, status, or control.
But money itself isn’t evil.
In fact, I’ve seen the opposite.
I’ve seen money give women choices.
I still remember a friend of mine who was trapped in an abusive relationship. She wanted to leave, but she felt financially dependent and didn’t believe she could make it on her own.
Her lack of money wasn’t the problem.
Her lack of options was.
Money creates options.
It gives us the ability to leave a toxic job.
Start a business.
Ask for a raise.
Take time off to care for family.
Travel.
Give generously.
Help people we love.
Build something meaningful.
The world needs more women with money because the world needs more women with choices.
That’s why I believe financial education matters so much.
Not because money is the goal.
Freedom is the goal.
Money simply gives us more choices about how we use that freedom.
So here’s my question for you:
What money belief are you still carrying around inside your frame?
And is it helping you—or holding you back?
